Subject Overviews

Success for All The curricular foundation for Liza Jackson is the "Success for All" program as designed by researchers at Johns Hopkins University. This program has been successfully implemented in schools around the country and validated as effective based on scientifically proven research. (Show Me the Evidence! Proven and Promising Programs for American Schools; Slavin, Robert E. and Fashola, Olatokumbo S., Corwin Press, Inc., 1998). "Success for All" focuses on reading.
Success for All offers a comprehensive solution that increase student achievement across the board. Proven classroom curriculum and instructional strategies, with schoolwide support systems, help ensure that every child is successful.
Getting Along Together Grades K-5 GAT2
All subjects are delivered in a cooperative group setting. Students in each class are assigned to four-to-five-member cooperative learning teams. Teams choose team names and sit together, working with partners within the team on some activities. Scores on the tests, writing activities, book reports and adherence to Cooperative Learning Standards contribute to a team score. Teams earn recognition based on a preset standard.
To facilitate cooperative learning, the Getting Along Together program is taught. It is developed by Success for All Foundation, Harvard University and University of Michigan to help students build social and emotion skills and apply them in and out of the classroom. Getting Along Together has a three-pronged focus: students learn thinking and cognitive skills, emotional management, as well as interpersonal and social skills. Collectively, these skills and strategies create a peaceful school environment where students are empowered to manage their own behavior, decrease conflict, and increase receptivity to learning.
Kindergarten- KinderCorner2
The kindergarten component, KinderCorner 2, provides child-centered curriculum that gives children a needed foundation for success in elementary school. KinderCorner is a comprehensive kindergarten program based on research that helps children make sense of the world around them, fostering development of oral language, interpersonal and self-help skills, as well as science and social studies concepts.
Reading First Grade Roots 5th edition
Students reading at the first-grade level participate in the Roots 5th Edition Program. This program is based on research that illustrates the need for students to learn to read in meaningful contexts and at the same time to have a systematic presentation of word attack skills. The idea in a Reading Roots lesson is to teach the same sound discriminations many ways, to involve many sensory modalities, and to maintain students’ active engagement, enthusiasm, and interest in the lesson. It is a research-based, beginning-reading program that provides a strong base for young readers through systematic phonics instruction, supported by decodable stories, and instruction in fluency and comprehension.
During the 90 minutes of reading instruction, students in first grade are grouped across grade level according to their present level of performance in reading. Such grouping ensures that students receive appropriate targeted instruction, allowing them maximum growth during each nine-week session. Furthermore, teachers can increase the time spent in direct instruction and reduce the time spent on seat work. Children are assessed at the beginning of the year and are reassessed every nine weeks to determine their reading skills and growth.
Reading 2-5
Students reading at the second through fifth grade levels participate in the Journeys Reading Program. It provides an instructional system for reading both literature and informational texts, for acquiring foundational skills, and for developing mastery of speaking, listening and writing. Anchor text reading instruction challenges students well beyond their first encounter. A special three-part routine guides student to grasp big ideas, then analyze short passages, and finally undertake independent close reading.
Math K- 5
At LJPS we use Houghton Mifflin/Harcourt’s Go Math’s comprehensive math program in grades K – 5. The Go Math program supports the Florida State Standards and the NCTM and the (National Council for Teachers of Mathematics) focal points
Go Math used the 5E instructional model—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate—transforms planning and teaching and develops mathematical understanding in students. It gives equal attention to conceptual understanding, fluency and application. Go Math provides the opportunity for lifelong learning skills for students in the 21st century by developing informational and communication skills, higher order thinking skills, problem solving skills, independent learning, and real-world connections.
Go math addresses mindset matters. Having a growth mindset means understanding that with effort, learning can grow, and everyone can be successful. This helps create a learning environment that foster a growth mindset, motivating students to persevere and become effective problem solvers.
