A Research-based Philosophy

Grades 6-9 at LJPS are based on the latest research regarding developmentally-appropriate environments for adolescents.

Each grade has an interdisciplinary teaching team consisting of a math teacher, a language arts teacher, a science teacher, a social studies teacher, a Spanish teacher and a critical thinking skills teacher.  These teachers share common planning time and teach the same group of students throughout the day.  They get to know the students and families and are able to respond to their needs and abilities.  Teaming allows the teachers to plan field trips and interdisciplinary activities together, and to align policies and procedures so that students have a consistent experience.

Because the teachers know the students on their teams and plan together to meet their needs, when it's time for a parent conference it generally is with all the student's teachers.  That gives families a clear picture of progress across the subject areas.

The Assistant Principal for Grades 6-9

At LJPS there is an administrator assigned specifically to grades 6-9.  This assistant principal meets weekly with teachers, oversees curriculum and instruction, and ensures that student needs are being met.  The AP for grades 6-9 gets to know the students and is the main point of contact for families.  You will see the grades 6-9 AP at conferences, IEP meetings, and extracurricular activities.  Don't hesitate to call on this important team member.
